Mile Zero in Dawson Creek

Mile '0' in Dawson Creek Posted by Picasa

The exciting official starting point of anybody's trip to Alaska! If you're driving to the 49th state there's one way in...and one way out. This is it.

We're on our way back to the lower 48, but our adventure continues.

Cracked our windshield on the Alcan

There you go. Our last day on the Alaskan Highway. Everyone, but everyone says you'll get a cracked windshield. We're on our way out and patting ourselves on the back talking about how everyone was so, so, so very wrong. Then bam. An evil trucker popped us with a little rock off the road. They do it with glee I believe. I told my husband not to replace the windshield. There's a story there and I can tell it every time someone asks about the crack. It's our badge of honor I say.

These are the hives

I don't know why, but I expected something hive shaped. When I saw the bees inside the glass it was neat to see. The queen has a white dot painted on her back so you can watch her lay her eggs. I saw two queens. The bees come in from outside anytime they want through tubes.

This is a big stop for a lot of tourists. The Milepost magazine says not to miss it. It wasn't as super great as I thought it would be, but it was good.

You'll see there is a tube that the honey flows out of. There is also, next to it, a tube of pollen! They collect the pollen off of the bees legs and sell it to eat. I tasted a bit and it wasn't bad. It has a slight natural honey flavoring to it.

Learning to change a flat

Learning how to change a flat tire Posted by Picasa

Learning happens all the time. Today, our last day. What day? Our last day on the Alaskan Highway, we get a blowout. We were all safe. In fact we didn't know it was flat except we stopped for fuel in Chetwynd. Traveling mercies are with us and for that I give thanks to God. The rim is fine. Husband and son change the tire and we go buy a new one at the next big city.

Ruby the Dog

Dog our son fell in love with Posted by Picasa

Our son is allergic but he wants a dog so badly. He spent a long time playing with Ruby, the owner's dog. I think she was a Vizsla. They have the sweetest of personalities. I would sit by her and giggle and she'd nuzzle me and push me over.

This looks nicer than it was. It rained and the ground was muddy. It's awful because with a kid you can hardly keep the trailer floor clean. I cooked fried chicken under the awning, but the rain was a drag and ruined the day. The showers were gross but, hey, the hot water was free and unlimited. Mosquitoes EVERYWHERE. We were so glad to leave.
